OnThisDay in 1970, NBC broadcast The Switched On Symphony. This bold program asserted that classical and rock music could, in fact, co-exist, and enlisted Zubin Mehta, the LA Phil, and the Los Angeles Master Chorale to join forces with Ray Charles, Santana, Jethro Tull, The Nice, and more. The special was nominated for three Emmys, including Best Variety or Musical Program (Classical). Two months later, Zubin and the orchestra would take on the world of rock again in the world premiere of their collaboration with Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention, “200 Motels.” LAPhil100
