My Favorite Films of 2018
9. “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”
Dir. Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey, & Rodney Rothman
1h 56m, rated PG
I didn’t see this in the theater. Shame on me for that. I’m going to be kicking myself in the head for the rest of my life for that. This film went past my expectations, which were high before even watching it. I heard something that over 800 filmmakers all over the world helped make this film. It shows because this is damn near perfect animation. It literally feels like a comic book come to life. The action is explosive, colorful, and mixes well with its comedic and emotional beats. The soundtrack is also amazing. I love all the characters and they have great comedic timing. The relationship between Miles, his father, and his uncle is kind of the heart of the story. The message of the film really got to me. The idea that anyone can be Spider-Man, as if to say anyone can anything. It doesn’t matter who you are or where you came from, you can do whatever you put your mind to.
It’s one of the best comic book films I’ve ever seen, because it truly fits the term.
Also, this is my favorite Stan Lee cameo.
“It always fits, eventually.”
Rest in Peace Stan. Thank you for creating some of my favorite superheroes. Including Spider-Man, a favorite of mine since childhood.
“I never thought I'd be able to do any of this stuff, but I can. Anyone can wear the mask. You could wear the mask. If you didn't know that before, I hope you do now. 'Cause I'm Spider-Man, and I'm not the only one. Not by a long shot.”
