Tilted Head by Mark Manders
Disturbing, yet beautiful. This giant head sculpture looks like an incomplete piece of art, made of clay. However, it is completed and is entirely bronze. Incredible to produce this look from bronze
I find it disturbing because it looks like half the head has been sliced off. It’s almost as if Lady Liberty’s head has been served up on a platter - especially given what’s going on in the world right now
The chairs and suitcase at the back of the sculpture are seemingly there for support, but are life size, compared to the head. Why? What’s in the suitcase? Where are we going, or not going?
The wooden planks look like they are pushing the face down. They also look like scaffolding planks, like a structure that is being repaired? But they’re on the head suggesting walking over it. Almost like a muddy walkway, in which someone has chucked down a few planks of wood, so you don’t have to walk in the mud - or get your feet wet
I believe it is a wonderful piece of art that evokes so many thoughts and ideas. Personally, I believe it to be a reflection of today’s world, one in which we have the emblem of liberty and justice, but we’d rather walk all over it than stand by it
This art installation is on 60th and 5th, New York
