SCAPULAR MOBILITY ( posturepro) When people hear the word “core” they usually think about their abdominal muscles. We all know that we have to have a strong core for improved posture, balance and overall strength. But what if I told you your shoulders have their own core? The scapula, commonly referred to as the “shoulder blade,” is a large, flat bone that sits on top of the rib cage; it is held in place by the many muscles of the shoulder girdle The scapulothoracic joint relies on the coordinated dance of 17 muscles as well as its mobility at three other joints — the acromioclavicular, sternoclavicular, and glenohumeral joints — to provide stability for the rest of the arm and shoulder If you look at the picture, you can see all the different vectors of force pulling the scapula in every direction. Your shoulder executes 10 different movements -Elevation -Depression -Upward rotation -Downward rotation -Internal rotation -External rotation -Anterior tilt -Posterior tilt -Adduction -Abduction The shoulder requires both mobility and stability in order to support and stabilize the rest of the upper extremity. Poor movement patterns and/or deficits in muscle strength at the scapula can lead to uncoordinated movement, instability and pain/injury in the elbow, wrist and hand When there are imbalances and loss of coordination, that’s when problems occur, such as 👎🏼shoulder impingement (supraspinatus/subacromial bursitis) 👎🏼biceps tendinosis 👎🏼cervical / scapular instability 👎🏼scapular winging 🥜In a nutshell, if you don’t have good motor control and coordination of your scapular muscles, you open yourself up to common overuse injuries including tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis), golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis), tendinitis, DeQuervain’s tenosynovitis and skier’s thumb BTW, we will be in 🇺🇸Chicago on February 15 - 17, 2019 If you’re interested e-mail us at 👉🏼education posturepro.co ❤️TAG A FRIEND posturepro shoulder fitness posturology
