Joan of Arc. Heroine. Prophet. Heretic. Insane. Noble. Witch. Saviour. Saint. Possessed. Warrior. Victorious. Tormented. Patriot. Defeated. Peasant. Pawn. Feminist. Prisoner.
These are a few of the ways this complex figure has been described. If you've never heard her story, I recommend you look her up. It's a fascinating tale of historically significance surrounding a girl who was a pariah during her time.
There were many statues in the cathedral honoring many saints, bishops and cardinals. Not being French, or Catholic, I didn't know who any of them were, except for Jesus, Mary and Joan. This statue of Joan was my favorite; likely because I knew her story. I'm glad to see she was honored by being portrayed in her battle armor and weapons while praying for victory in battle. I believe this is how she'd want to be remembered; a faithful warrior on an unrelenting mission, accountable only to God.
Joan was captured, tried as a heretic and burned at the stake at age 19. After her death the trial was revisited and her honor restored as both a martyr and a saint.
