Top 5 Potential Breakout Candidates for 2019-2020! -
Keep in mind, I am ONLY including players who are obviously talented, but are awaiting their full chance to “spread their wings”. That is why all 5 of these players are in their 2nd year. It is a lot easier to assume the younger rookies are more posed for a breakout than other players who have been in the league longer.
1.) DJ Moore WR, Carolina - Rookie year DJ Moore opened eyes. On a Carolina team that really relied on Christian Mccaffery and Cam Newton in the backfield, DJ Moore was able to grab 55 receptions for roughly 800 yards. He managed to do this while being the 2nd option in the backfield behind Devin Funchess, who is now on the Colts. This gives DJ Moore the keys to the drivers seat, and now that Carolina knows they have a reliable weapon for Cam to pass to. It’s not far out of reach to say DJ Moore is in store for a 1k+ yard season.
2.) Jaire Alexander CB, Green Bay - Jaire had one of the most underrated seasons last year as a Rookie. A lot of his success was overshadowed by Denzel Ward, and the amount of interception he mounted up. However, while playing 15 games in 2018, Jaire managed to rank 19th out of all Cornerbacks in pass breakups, while also having very solid Productivity stats when used in the slot. His raw talent, while showing flashes of being able to make fantastic plays make me think he’s ready to open some eyes like Denzel Ward.
Tremaine Edmunds LB, Buffalo - Tremaine Edmunds is under the same situation as Jaire Alexander. Similar to Jaire being unnoticed from the hype of Denzel Ward, Tremaine did the same from Darius Leonard and Roquon Smith. Statistically, Tremaine had a fantastic season for a rookie. In 15 games last season, he managed to stay on the field 99% of the time, gathering 99 tackles (16th best), 2 forced fumbles (5th best), 2 sacks (31st), and 4 tackles for loss (28th). Before you judge too quickly, keep in mind Tremaine is a MLB, and most of the sacks and TFL stats are generally meant to be acquired by EDGE rushers and Outside Linebackers. Tremaine has shown he can stay on the field for a long time. -
