Today is World Turtle Day. 🐢
This sea turtle and many other marine species are endangered because we (yes, YOU and ME) keep severely damaging their world with plastics and carbon emissions. Did you know that today, the seas absorb a quarter of all man made carbon emissions? This leads to acidification – the rapidly dying corals in Australia’s Great Barrier Reef have been a sad popular example for the damage that acidification causes in the past years. But thats just the top of the melting iceberg really. Marine ecosystems are in serious danger
Plastics won’t biodegrade. At all. A plastic bag will fall apart into hundreds and thousands of tiny pieces, known as microplastics. Marine animals will absorb these tiny particles. Some scientists believe that every salt-water fish you eat today contains microplastics – this means, if you eat the fish, you eat the plastics. Nice, huh? Big pieces of plastics are found in the stomachs of larger marine animals, such as birds and whales, starving them to death. Plastics are everywhere and we can’t get rid of them unless we finally end producing them and find decent biodegradable alternatives, such as sugar cane
So what can you do?
➡️ STOP. USING. PLASTICS. To stop the production, we have to stop the consumption! Take your reusable shopping bags with you. Buy food without packaging. Take your reusable water bottle with you. Separate your trash. Recycle.
➡️Ride your bicycle instead of a car and use public transport.
➡️Fly consciously. Does it really have to be Thailand this year? Think twice.
➡️Eat less meat
I don’t think everybody has to to everything but everybody MUST do something if we want to keep this world for following generations. If the oceans die, we all do
(Sorry for the severe headsup people. If you know me well, you know how much I love the beach and the ocean and all marine life, this topic is just very, very dear to me.) 🌊💕
