‘ LAUGHTER is a precious commodity, and the ability of make people laugh is sheer TALENT’. Having attended renowned stand –up comedy shows that I haven’t found funny, last evening’s trip to TheSiddhusofUpperJuhu, a play by RahulDaCunha featuring, RajitKapur and Shernaz Patel in the lead, was really worth it as it was full of ROFL moments. When I told my daughter aninssss who suggested the play that the play been running since 2015 (that’s 4 long years) she was surprised, when I saw the full house and the quality crowd – it was my turn to be delightfully surprised!
The plot revolves around Rajit (middle aged Bubbles) and Shernaz (Behroz) an urban couple, who live in Upper Juhu (Andheri 🤣) having spent all their life’s earnings to buy this dream apartment with a sea view (where you need binoculars to see the sea), paper thin walls, annoying neighbours, recurring plumbing issues and barking dogs/traffics horns at midnight, are relatable to any true blue MUMBAIKAR. The puncy Punjabi from Rajit, and the typical Bawa lines from Shernaz make the situations HILARIOUS.
To make matters worse, Bubbles loses his job – which almost makes him lose his mind, leading to Behroz finding one (to step in as the loyal wife), which also is lost when the company declares bankruptcy, a daylight robbery that has them cleaned out etc may make the play seem morose, but it is far from that. The problems are addressed realistically, with stellar dialogues and actually have a hint of OPTIMISIM. The well timed references to Arnab, ‘Ache Din Ayenge’ had the audience in splits.
Good sets, Rishi K as the RJ, costumes and natural make up were a great add on to BRILLIANT ACTING, a witty SCRIPT and good DIRECTION making it obvious why the play still runs to packed houses after 4 years. An evening of intelligent amusement rageproductions
