🎬 Queen - A Kind Of Magic
Live Budapest, Hungary, 1986
▶️ "You must have a gimmick"
▪️ Ken Testi, old friend:.
- 'This was 1969. Before joining his first band, Freddie's opening gambit was, ‘I’m a singer but I haven’t got a band’. Looking back, it was a brilliant strategy. Freddie was shy offstage, but he knew how to front a show. It was his way of expressing that side of his personality. Everything he did on stage later in Queen, he was doing it with his previous band at his first gig: marching from one end of the stage to another, from left to right and back again. Stomping about. At first, he had his back to the audience for half of the first number, but by the end of the first song, the shyness was gone, something clicked and he was performing so greatly. He brought dynamics, freshness and presentation to a band that had been completely lacking previously. In November, the band played at a girls’ school dance in Widnes. Freddie launched into his usual routine only for the base of his microphone stand to fall off. Undeterred, he sung the rest of the gig without it like a pro. He told me: 'It’s my gimmick, dear. You must always have a gimmick!''
▶️ Some (very few) people are born with star, and by all the testimonies, it's obvious Freddie had an inner galaxy. Professionalism and pure talent coming through his skin! Enjoy this fab performance with Freddie at his best, playing around with his mic and giving a masterclass in 'How to front a show' 😎
