Hereditary (2018) • Director - Ari Aster Cast - Milly Shapiro, Alex Wolff, Toni Collette, Gabriel Byrne, and Ann Dowd • I feel like this movie got a lot of hate and I’m not sure why this is an insanely solid horror movie.

Blue Valentine Director: Derek Cianfrance Blue Valentine is a story about falling in love and falling out of it. It's an intimate character study of a couple,Dean(Ryan Gosling), and Cynthia(Michelle Williams), both of whom have a lot of childhood baggage, something which haunts them, becomes a source of there insecurities and ultimately affects there marriage. Blue Valentine is not your average love story, it's layered, uses parallel storytelling to emphasize character growth and is an extremely heartbreaking film to watch. However, the realism with which the writing of the film depicts Dean and Cynthia's relationship, through all of its ups and downs, is utterly commendable. Watch it for it's writing and brilliant cinematography by Andrij Parekh, which does a great job of depicting the characters inner turmoil and discomfort. However, this is a sad film, and it might be an emotionally draining experience. thegalwhorants

Continuing with the Asian exploitation theme, plus combining today's date of 4/20, and mixing it with this weekends Easter holiday seems almost like the perfect setup for 1983's "The Killing of Satan". One of the more readily accessible and better known zany Filipino horror-fantasies "The Killing" acts as a great stepping stone to the wild side of Asian cinema for those not familiar. The story tells of an average man Lando San Miguel who after witnessing unholy evil and unjust corruption (and being shot in the head, only to rise again) is tasked with fighting Satan and his army of faithful servants. To add to the stakes, Satan has captured Lando's daughter and has prepared her for the ultimate sacrifice! Lando must save his daughter, his people, and all that is good from the grasp of Satan. But this is no easy task, and Lando is pitted against hideous monsters, lustful sin, and magical trickery! "The Killing of Satan" is a guaranteed great time from start to finish. It features some major players in the Filipino acting world of the time, which tend to go unnoticed by outside audiences. Most notably the lead Lando played by Ramon Revilla Sr. who was an acting legend and pursued a successful career in politcs up until 2004. In 2011 he even claimed to have a whopping 72 ! He is still alive today although has been experiencing some serious health issues over the past few months. "The Killing of Satan" stands fresh and strong even today just like its timeless message of "good versus evil". For those who grew up renting this on VHS with its beautiful oversized box and eye-popping artwork, the movie will always hold a solid place in our hearts. For those who haven't seen it, but are curious I'd totally recommend seeking this and other Filipino/Asian horror out. Especially from the era '70s and '80s. A scholar and responsible guy since an early age, Mohan Bhargava is an accurate representation of “follow what your heart desires.” He left his friends and close-ones at a tender age to pursue studies and then a dream career in NASA. However, upon having a transformation of heart towards motherland, he was brave enough to quit all his aspirations and a well-settled comfortable life in the USA. Mohan strongly believes that every small effort counts towards securing fruitful results. He is someone who looks at the brighter side of the picture, and understands that everyone can be made to act positively and constructively (Mann se Raavan jo nikale, Ram uske mann mein hai). Growing up with people possessing an open mindset in a developed society, Mohan finds it challenging to cope up with the issue of casteism. He believes everyone deserves the freedom of choice and together they can contribute towards a greater world. Most importantly, rather than just speaking up, Mohan believes in acting on those beliefs, although he never hesitates in putting forward his thoughts, no matter who he is talking to. Despite being so brave and impactful on the face, Mohan is exceptionally vulnerable and weak emotionally and cares for people very close to him. The lines “Tujhse zindagi hai ye keh rahi, sab to paa liya ab hai kya kami” summarize this beautifully, depicting that although he followed his heart at every moment, he still feels incomplete and disconnected from everyone he loves. Like many of us, Mohan struggles with his internal conflicts and likes spending some alone time, but is generally very easy going with people and . He talks to everyone in their tone and never flaunts about his achievements and life in the USA unless asked for. Mohan is shy and respectful towards women, and not very comfortable on the romantic front. Although wealthy, he is not materialistic and prefers simplicity but ensures no compromise on the necessities such as drinking water and caravan. And therefore, the scene where he drinks water from an earthen cup during his train journey is a strong indication of his transformation. PS: Apne hi paani mein pighal jaana, barf ka muqaddar hota hai!

📼 "The Satanic Rites Of Dracula" 😈💀It's the only title I give this flick. This VHS tape says "Rites Of Dracula" and, as many of you monsters know, "Brides Of Dracula" is another title givin to this 70's Hammer classic. But fuck that. 😈 I love this flick no matter how slow it gets. Christopher Lee will always be my favorite Count! Movie of the day: Shutter Island Never in my life have I met anyone, who watched this movie and didn't like it. It's a mind bending thriller, with elements of psychological horror. The screenplay by Leata Karlogridis and direction by Martin Scorsese, does a brilliant job of misguiding the viewer, the movie always keeps us guessing. On repeat viewings, you will be able to spot clues which foreshadow it's major twist, but in the first viewing, it's difficult to predict what's really going on Every time I watch this movie, or any DiCaprio performance for that matter, I always wonder, how and why did it take Leonardo DiCaprio so long to win an Oscar, he is just brilliant in Shutter Island. thegalwhorants

Been super busy lately with art, zine work, and convention stuff, but I wanted to squeeze another quick movie post out while I take a breather! So by popular request I chose the Shaw Brothers 1983 gross-out epic "Seeding of a Ghost". It was only only a matter of time before "Seeding" got another viewing, and for obvious reasons as this one certainly delivers the insanity that preceeds it. An unfaithful wife gets caught up with the wrong people and murdered. Her husband sees no justice taken against the thugs and is even suspect of her death. Wanting full revenge he turns to black magic which uses his wife's corpse to unleash an unstoppable reign of black magic terror. The process is called "Seeding of a Ghost" and comes with great consequence. Starring Philip Ko who the same year acted in another recently reviewed Shaw Brothers exploitation piece "The Boxers Omen" and genre familiar Norman Chu "Seeding of a Ghost" is a visual treasure trove of monsterous practical effects and oozing bloody horror. Not to mention the beautiful set designs and haunting atmospheric lighting that totally defines these films of the time. Sadly these visual gems seem to be absolutely lost in modern Asian horror and from the past decade as well. I feel most newer Asian films (not all) rely too heavily on CGI/blood spray and visuals, and seem way too over-the-top and self-aware which pulls away from what made these older classic gruesome horror flicks such effectivly disturbing eye candy. This nice little era of '80s CAT-III horror seems to be often overlooked by the vast majority of horror fans. I recommed everyone take some time and treat yourself to movies like "Seeding of a Ghost", "Devil Fetus", or "The Boxers Omen". Trust me, you'll dig it! And if you have already, you know what I'm talking about! Finding a fan of this genre is finding a friend for life! P.S. My great friend and fellow Asian horror film fanatic Jason Lane wrote up a stellar piece on "Seeding of a Ghost" and a few others in the last issue of Evilspeak Magazine. Jason goes more into depth than I do here, and I highly recommend you check his article out if black magic/CAT III films intrest you!
