Cue dog postany excuse. Ignore if you wish sorry 🤷♀️
23/07/19. 7 years ago today. We went to pick this little guy up. Sam was the runt of the litter. Smallest out the lot & required that extra bit of care in his early weeks. He was known as the ‘wee special one’. Home to the Lakes he went. 3 weeks later, he finally got his 12 week jab. He went to the vets in the morning & you could say that Bryan & I got rather psyched by the fact we could finally let him loose outside. That same afternoon, off to Langdale we went 👆. Forgetting that Sam was just 12 weeks & puppies sleep a lot, as well as shouldn’t be doing too much too soon (missed this advice), we ended up doing about a 6km walk with him (no carrying). His first intro to sheep, rough trails, exercise, lakes weather - basically what lied ahead for him. As you can guess, he was out of it for sometime once we got home, but he flipping well loved it
Leads me on to this. Numerous times we have been asked how we’ve trained him. Truth is we haven’t. Sam has just learnt over time. We’ve exposed him to our way of life & how it all works. He knows sheep are just everywhere & not worth the attention. He knows that below crags where our packs are left, to stay there. He knows that smiling at people is good (when they realise it’s smiling not snarling). He knows that when we say ‘this side’ that means be the side we’re on. He knows when to wait & let us catch up (I’m dreading the day it’s the other way round). Sam’s just figured this all out. Dogs are clever, there’s no denying it
What he doesn’t know is how to roll over, how to fetch & retrieve, to speak on command or play dead. He’s not even the best on a lead as he’s hardly ever on one. He’s not amazing with either.
I’m not saying this works for every dog as all owners & dogs are different. But in our little family, this is the way it’s been from the very first day
I hope we’ve got at least another 7 of these years yet. We may not be getting him up to the big mountain crags in future years, but we’ve done a shit load with him that we weren’t expecting too as it is. We’ll let you age gracefully Sam. Just not yet
