"Dinner for (of) one", YH, 2019. Oil on canvas canvas panel. Art school brief. Swipe left for more images.
The brief was to take figures from various paintings and put them together in your own way, in your own style (or not). We were given full license to steal, on purpose, and create something totally new. From 3 different studies, I chose this setup. The artwork comprises 3 different paintings, the mirror element, the woman smirking at the edge of the table having dinner, and the figure laying (spread) across the table. Yes, most of you would recognize that's its the figure from Penny Siopis's artwork.
This brief challenged me in more ways I could ever imagine, especially as we were pressed heavily for time before ethe preparation of the Spring exhibition coming up.
I enjoyed practicing glazing and working with so much red, different hues of it and what the entire image conveys through colours, composition and paying attention to little details like information within the shadows.
Even painting the table cloth from imagination was a mind-boggling challenge. I included 2of the refence images
There's loads of room to improve, but every canvas you tackle, is an opportunity to learn and grow. So I'll edit, but I look forward to the next brief next term.
For now, I NEED SLEEP.
