“The Plane” — John Williams, Empire of the Sun.
One of my favorite examples of how Williams’ music and Spielberg’s imagery mix to make movie magic, “The Plane” is a beautifully rousing piece in the Maestro’s work for the film Empire of the Sun.
Here, Jim’s theme is tied with with the powerful vocals of a boy’s choir, adding not only a sense of grandeur, but of religiosity as well. This allows the audience to feel the intimate sense of wonder and awe Jim feels as he approaches the plane that he has idolized, while also evoking themes of faith and childhood.
This ethereal, heavenly sound combined with the soft, personal soul of this track once again shows how Williams is able to draw the emotions from a picture, especially considering that this entire scene features no dialogue! Well done, Maestro!
As always, I do not own any of the audio or imagery used. All rights to their respective owners.
Also, this is an alternate version of the track. Rest assured, it only differs marginally from the film version and was used for convenience of timing.
