Battle of the Heroes was composed for the epic battle between Anakin and Ob-Wan and the climax of Revenge of the Sith. The piece employed the use of a choir which echoes Duel of the Fates from Phantom Menace.
The main melodic line of the piece resembles a Dies Irae melody that can be found in numerous works over the years, including works of Mozart and Berlioz.
The piece starts quietly with the violas playing a tremolo ostinato. The first exposition of the melody is played on stopped horns as cellos join the the ostinato. As the piece builds the main theme of the piece explodes with the horns, violins, and full choir. The piece is interrupted by the appearance of the Force Theme, played in a minor key, not at all like its usual, heroic playing in the films. As the piece ends we are left the same ostinato, this time a little disjointed before one final, explosive chord of D minor form the orchestra.
The piece resembles the destruction of the bond of friendship and brotherhood that Anakin and Obi-Wan share in what is possibly the most emotionally charged part of the entire prequel series. It is a stunning piece that nods to the Luke/Darth Vader clash of lightsabers in Empire Strikes Back, exhorting the duality of history repeating itself.
