Iris is a genus with 260–300 species of flowering plants. It takes its name from the Greek word for a rainbow, which is also the name for the Greek goddess of the rainbow, Iris. Some authors state that the name refers to the wide variety of flower colors found among the many species. Irises attract butterflies and hummingbirds and make lovely cut flowers. The distinctive flowers have three large outer petals called “falls” and three inner upright petals called “standards.” The falls may have beards or crests. Bearded iris are so-called because they have soft hairs along the center of the falls. In crested iris, the hairs form a comb or ridge. flowers nature color colors colorful flower flowerstagram garden naturephotography naturelovers iris purple spring springtime thebeautyin_flowers thebeautyin_flowers great_myflower satochi1514 ig_macro_clicks manasphotography Passion_4_living_photos exclusive_world_flower aca7777777 asi_es_flores waleskahcastillo quatro_estacoes2_ marilsabulhoes ketlencf_ majotess nandapaisagens lory_pastelflowers criscris6.8 macroflowers_kingdom melampyrum mat_macro_flowers mat_kozakewycz bonesarchitect _lookatme_macro maria_albornoz moon_bestflowers conchitamcneal minni62 setiobe floralflourish ns_spring2019 mrsjoyful flowerstagram gardening

What constitutes a flower and what a weed? Surely you’ve heard the age old adage that ‘A weed is merely a flower in the wrong place’? If this is so why are we so quick to classify certain plants as weeds in our garden? For many people if a dandelion pops its head up in our perfect lawns it is considered a weed. But then- if you were to cultivate some dandelions in a gorgeous container and water them, deadhead them and maintain them….are they still then considered a weed? ○ Perhaps the classification of a ‘weed’ rather than a ‘flower’ in the eye of the beholder and the knowledge -or lack of- the benefits of a plant? With this Thursday the 28th of March being ‘International weed appreciation day’ perhaps educating ourselves about the characteristics, uses and history of plants and learning how they can benefit us and our wildlife in an everyday way is the best way to seeing the flower in the weed. ○ Bramble cocktails anyone? ♡ IMAGE: picking Blackberry Brambles Rubus fruticosus Yes, the bramble is the bane of many gardeners lives. Curling its way through hedges and through shrubbery, these arching branches covered in shiny leaves are often considered weeds. Looking a little closer at these branches however you’ll be surprised to find that there are so many uses for this plant. I’m not just talking about the amazingly tasty blackberries in Autumn which always remind me of another poet-the late, great Seamus Heaney- our very own Nobel prize winner. The leaves too can be used in various ways, for example to make tea and they have many healing properties at this time of the year —— Also featuring the new Herbae scent by loccitane_uk_ire loccitane 📷 colingillenphotos garden gardens gardendesign dreamgardens irishdesign meadowstyle gardengoals wildinspiration design wildatlanticway creative irishdesign instagarden gardensdesigner deckdesign gardenheaven gardenbeauty inspiration wild ig beautiful gardenlife monday weeds weedappreciationday loveyourweeds herbae loccitane alfredlordtennyson poetlaureate
