Lago de Atitlan, Guatemala - We were in Guatemala doing medical humanitarian work, primarily with the hundreds of displaced living in the Guatemala City landfill. Poverty was omnipresent, as was military force. Over and over I heard stories of people in rural communities driven out of their generational homes and into the starving camps of the capital. There were also stories of abductions and conflicts with militarized rebel groups. And this is to say nothing of the ever escalating rates of violent crime. It’s a stark contrast, human suffering brushed across one of the world’s most beautiful canvases.
