Iqbal (2005) | Hindi | Nagesh Kukunoor
This is a love letter to a song that has helped me through many tough times in life. In 2005, I was a 14 year old trying to make sense of a myriad of things - what subjects I like to study, whether I should focus more on science on literature, if I am good at any of these at all, if I am growing to be a pretty girl or an unattractive one you know, basic teenage stuff. Then along came Iqbal on screen, a film about a boy ready to brave all odds to fulfill his dream of becoming a cricketer. Well I didn't have anything to do with cricket, but Iqbal's dedication and perseverance hit me very strongly. There was me, showered with all the comforts and facilities I could ask for, groaning at books, trying to escape responsibilities. Then there was Iqbal, bounded by a speech and hearing impairment, coming from a poor farmer family, intent on giving his best in doing what he is meant to do. He had the support of his sister Khadija and an unlikely coach in Mohit, and his story taught me that putting your heart and soul into something can achieve you anything. More than the movie itself I fell in love with the song Aashayein beautifully composed by Salim-Sulaiman and sung by the irreplaceable KK, every word of which generated new waves of courage and optimism. The lyrics by Irfan Siddiqui struck exactly at the right places:
"Toofano ko cheer ke manzilo ko chheen le"
Before every major exam or even a small class presentation, I would listen to this song and remind myself of the hardships that Iqbal went through.
In my opinion, the song has a special appeal also because of its rhythmic undertone. The word Aashayein keeps repeating, reminding us of the desires we have, which we must identify of course in order to work with them. Once we know what our goal is, the song tells us that happiness is ours to achieve. "Ud jaaye leke khushi apne sang tujhko wahan
Jannat se mulaqat ho, poori ho teri har dua"
