The short story anthologies, by Andrea Johnson. Loyalty, part 3- The conclusion
The hunt had begun. Fury, the lone black alpha female wolf, raced through the dark forest of Poma lark trees. But already the great and fierce beast was gaining on her. In a final attempt to evade him, she headed into a closed off cave, thinking she could hide. But it was a fatal mistake. Fury's heart raced in panic, as she saw it was a dead end.
The beast slowly stalked into the cave behind her. Knowing she was trapped. His fierce and deadly eyes held retribution in them, for daring to challenge him. Fury could see the truth in them. And her end. She had failed. The beast would never make her his Queen. His eyes held death in them, as he growled low in his throat.
Fury, knowing that it was over, bowed her head. All she had ever wanted was to be by this great beast's side. But it was clear he would not choose her. There was only one thing left she could give him.
Fury stared at the great beast, and began to change. She shed her wolf coat, and once again became a human woman. It was the true reason she was always alone, and without a pack. It was her secret. She would never fully be one of them.
Fury shed her coat, and got on her knees, naked and bare before the beast. She stretched her hands and bowed her head low, and offered herself to the master of the forest. She waited as the beast roared in triumph, at her surrender. Waited for the killing blow.
Suddenly the beast spoke. His words crisp and final. "The only one you will ever bow to, will be me. A Queen never lowers her head for anyonebut her King." He turned and left the cave. And Fury knew without words, that she was to follow him. Her black coat of fur bloomed back into place, and the new Queen of Poma lark trees traced the steps of her King without question. Her trust had won her place by his side. But her loyaltywould keep her there
