A rare timepiece by one the world’s most revered watchmakers will soon be available at auction.
The George Daniels Grand Complication Pocket Watch, a handmade masterpiece by the preeminent British watchmaker, will lead the upcoming Phillips Geneva Watch Auction: Nine. The two-day auction, taking place in Geneva on May 11 and 12, will be presented by Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo, the watch department at Phillips auction house.
The pocket watch is expected to realize in excess of CHF1.5 million (US$1.5 million), according to a spokesperson from Phillips.
Made entirely by hand, Daniels, who died in 2011, used the pocket watch himself and it was never sold during his lifetime, according to the auction house. It was his only creation with an instantaneous perpetual calendar with retrograde date and minute repeater, both of which he designed himself.
The Grand Complication also incorporates the coaxial escapement, Daniels’ advancement of the mechanism that moves the watch's hands steadily. Daniels invented the technology in 1975, and it is seen as one of the greatest innovations in horology, the art of making clocks and watches, of the past 250 years, according to Phillips.
