Everywhere else in their range, the southern fox squirrel is found in a variety of colors, ranging from black to gray to a mix of mottled browns. But here on Bulls Island, every single squirrel is black. Why? Squirrels aren't native to the island, and a single pair - both black - were introduced by the landowner at the time in the early 1900s. Today, every single one of the hundreds of squirrels on the island is descended from this lone pair!
