The worst disaster in St. Louis history occurred in May 1849 when a fire broke out on the steamboat "White Cloud." A jam-packed levee, wooden buildings, and piles of lumber and hemp with barrels of lard and bacon mixed in contributed to a massive fire that decimated the city's riverfront. What you see here is the only known image of the ruins left behind Ever resilient, St. Louis was back on its feet in a matter of months, complete with a new look. Riverfront buildings were now made with a material that proved far less likely to burn: red brick 📷: Thomas Easterly, from the Easterly Daguerreotype Collection mohistlibrary waybackwednesday historicfire 1849 stlriverfront ruins brick thomaseasterly easterly daguerreotype earlyphotography vintagephotography stl stlouis stlgram stlouisgram stlhistory stlouishistory collections archives mohistorymuseum mohistlibrary FindYourselfHere

So excited to have had the opportunity to illustrate a place that’s very near and dear to my own heart. My husband and I were married in this spot back in 2013 and drawing this illustration brought back so many wonderful memories! Seeing it printed in gorgeous copper foil isn’t so bad either. 😍😉

This month we're shining a spotlight on Pearl Bailey, one of the featured stars in our MunyMemories exhibit. In November 1967, Bailey took over the role of Dolly Levi, starring opposite Cab Calloway in the new, all-black cast of "Hello, Dolly!" She brought the iconic character to themuny stage for the first time in 1968, earning a Tony Award for her portrayal of the energetic matchmaker that same year Bailey once again played Dolly Levi at The Muny in 1971.
