This month we're shining a spotlight on Pearl Bailey, one of the featured stars in our MunyMemories exhibit. Born in 1918 in Newport News, Virginia, Bailey made her Broadway debut—and her first connection with St. Louis—in 1946, when she played Butterfly in the short-lived musical "St. Louis Woman."
In November 1967, Bailey took over the role of Dolly Levi, starring opposite Cab Calloway in the new, all-black cast of "Hello, Dolly!" She brought the iconic character to themuny stage for the first time in 1968, earning a Tony Award for her portrayal of the energetic matchmaker that same year
Bailey once again played Dolly Levi at The Muny in 1971. She returned the following year for a special performance, "The Pearl Bailey Show," and was inducted into the Muny Hall of Fame in 1989
