A lot of Instagram is highlights, and I think we’re all guilty of it. I mean who wants to share the meltdowns, the crying ( and parents), the exhausted 5am mornings, the spit up stains, the incessant fightingso its easier and just plain happier to share the beautiful parts. But I think it’s important to also occasionally share the tough parts so we know we’re not alone. So we know that we’re normal, and our are normal.
This was a shot that I’m so glad my husband snapped of a post-school tantrum. Parents know these all too well, we often deal with them daily at this age. are deeply emotional and especially at the age where they go to school, and they tend to hold it all in all day long and then explode when they get home. Home is their safe place so in hind sight of a tantrum, I’m honored to be the safe place for all my ’s feelings.
I read on a post one time that when a tantrum starts, imagine yourself putting on your super suit and shield, and be a strong loving warrior in the midst of their storm. This is a VIPM (very important parenting moment). I have to remember that Releasing these feelings is so good for my . This explosion will clear the air and lift my ’s spirits. Staying present and calm is important, and sticking with whatever limits I’ve set and being a safe channel for these emotions is the very best thing I could ever do in this moment. So that’s what we do. It’s exhausting, and it’s hard for a sensitive introvert like me to absorb these feelings all day, I’m often emotionally drained by the end of the day, but I know the importance of this work. And after the tantrum passes, he’ll sit up and bounce off my lap, happy as a clam, like nothing ever happened. Can you imagine having that kind of non- judgement emotional support as a kid?
So stay strong parents. Put your super hero suits on today and be an amazing safe place for those big feelings. (Big fuzzy bear sweatshirts also help).
