ThrowbackThursday Dr. johnjshufeldt here: I was pranked by the office at our annual Ugly Sweater Party. That's right they chose my face for the front of their sweaters and won the contest. Swipe left to see the sweater up close.
But hey, if you can't laugh at yourself, you're not having enough fun. In my book, Ingredients of Outliers, I quote the late, great actress, Ethel Barrymore, "You grow up the day you have the first real laugh–at yourself.” To be able to laugh at oneself not only demonstrates maturity but also humility. The proud and the arrogant can never laugh off a mistake or an embarrassment. It would be an admission that they aren’t quite as perfect as they’d like people to believe.
I also talk about the importance of humor in two of my other personal development books. In career and relationship highs and lows, in parenting, and in life you'll need a good dose of humor for the tough times.
You can also use it to diffuse frustration, and tense business negotions and even win sales.
