Throwback to La La Land live in concert! This was my first time watching an orchestra concert. Not only that, it was my first time going to a concert with a proper dress and champagne on my hand. Adulting life?😂 I guess so. They played the instruments by syncing the musics on the movie that was featured on the large screen. Elizabeth Green (1906-1995) is regarded as one of the most influential educators, conductors, and authors of the 20th century. She was especially known for her ambition and love for education. In her over thirty years of teaching, Professor Green made several contributions to the art of conducting. Her belief was that conductors should not only practice the gestures involved in leading an ensemble, but also complete a comprehensive study of the work itself. She was once quoted saying, “Music lives only when the notes fly off the page and soar into glorious sound. The performer, the conductor, releases those notes from bondage through his or her feelings for the message through the power of imagination.” - Marina McLerran, McLerran Journal (April 2017) The music you hear is her arrangement of Johann Stamitz's "Sinfonia in D" (First Movement). This classic and energetic piece is accessible for Grade 3 or 4 string orchestra and it's on over 15 state lists Find it at your favorite retailer or at carlfischer.com/AS57 CarlFischerMusic. When your client is one of the most famous orchestra conductors in the world you have to take a picture 😁😁 I'm joking of course, it's only because they are so kind and sweet and it's always a pleasure to spend hours listen to stories from this incredible gentleman. 86 years old and a head of 40, that traveled all the world conducting the most incredible orchestras and the teacher of some of the most famous names of today. As I always say, the best part of my job is to meet this kind of people. Cultural diversity, equality and richness of aesthetics has been a staple of the ucdavis Symphony Orchestra for a decade now. Performing in one same evening major works by Ann Cleare, Esteban Benzecry and Brahms at the mondavicenter is a big statement. And performing it with such conviction, depth and at such a high level is even more inspiring. Thank you to each member of the UC Davis Symphony Orchestra for their leadership, dedication, curiosity to engage in the nuances of different sound worlds and phenomenal results, of which you should be very proud. It was an absolute joy to work with Danish born Børge Rosenbaum, better known as Victor Borge. His prowess as a great pianist, conductor and comedian was unique. He began his career as a concert pianist stemming from his prodigy days. He incorporated humor into his act originally by telling anti-Nazi jokes because he was appalled by the unfortunate events happening in Germany and throughout Europe. Needless to say, he was one of the first artists on the Nazi list to exterminate. He had gone to the Russian consulate and given a show. So many of the Russian consulate members were tremendous fans. When the Nazis invaded Denmark, they smuggled him onto a ship to go to parts of Europe that were not controlled by the Nazi’s. While giving a concert in Sweden, the Nazi’s were closing in, so he escaped to Finland and snuck out to his freedom on a US Army Transport with the clothes on his back and $20 in his pocket and not a word of English in his vocabulary. He adapted quickly to American life and manifested an incredible career. While on stage with the LA Phil, he actually had the orchestra laughing so hard during his routine that we couldn’t play the music because our eyes were filled with tears of laughter and we couldn’t see our parts. My stand partner and I sat very close to him. I remember once he looked at us because we were laughing so hard and couldn’t play. He just stared at us causing us, the orchestra and the audience to laugh harder and longer until our stomach muscles hurt. His timing was impeccable. During his 1988 visit, I was joking around with Maestro Borge in his dressing room before our concert at the Music Center and he kept coughing. I asked, “Are you OK, Maestro?” He replied, “My throat is sore.” Being the orchestra Candyman, I always carry cough drops with me as well as other candy. I gave them a few cough drops and he was very thankful. If you notice in the black & white photographs, you’ll see he has a cough drop in his fingers and I have the pack of cough drops in my right hand. (Continued below)
