2 weeks break from touching my viola
2 weeks ago, my loop that holds the tailpiece to the button (and rides the saddle) was loosening and as I was at a music festival in the middle of Finland, there weren't any nearby luthiers I could turn to until after the festival.
I was diagnosed a week ago with acute lumbago, and couldn't walk and barely sit for a week without crippling pain that felt like someone was stabbing me. My father bought a few days ago for me a back brace that has a heating pad and sends electric shocks (between 56&57 bpm) to the back which has significantly helped in the recovery process and enables me to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
When taking a significant break, I like to start with long tones, and focusing on my technique, making sure that every muscle is relaxed and that the bow is being used to it's full potential (here, half my attention to the bow arm, the other half to posture and relaxation). My goal here ISN'T to sound good, and that's important! The goal is to recuperate and rehabilitate the muscles and dexterity of playing the viola.
What are ways you recuperate playing after a long break? - F minor melodic galamian scale at 56.5 bpm
