America's greatest song reviewing duo, Leo Lockhart & Vanderbilt Orca, offer their take on "Panini" by Lil Nas X.
MY 2 ¢ents: I still don't quite know what to make of Lil Nas X. It confuses me that he named himself after one of the greatest rappers of all time yet makes music that sounds like he's never heard a single track off of "Illmatic". It confuses me that he first gained notoriety as an outspoken online Nicki Minaj stan yet some people were shocked to learn that he was gay. It REALLY confuses me that "Old Town Road" has been number 1 since before Kevin Durant's achilles exploded, despite being just a much less clever rehash of "Rappin' Duke". Ahhh, "Rappin' Duke", the 1984 novelty semi-hit by Shawn Brown that was immortalized by Biggie in "Juicy". I can't hear "Old Town Road" without thinking about it. I went back and listened to "Rappin' Duke" and yes, it's a million times funnier, smarter, catchier and more political than "OTR". It's also nearly a million times longer than "OTR", clocking in at just under six minutes. Alas, TikTok didn't exist back in '84, so "RD" didn't even touch the pop charts.
LNX's follow up single "Panini" has touched the pop charts, although it has no chance of blowing as big as "OTR". "Panini"'s a better song, just not a better meme. Over melancholy whistling melodies and strutting synths LNX questions an ex-lover who's jealous of his success. Let's be honest: we're ALL jealous of LNX's success. Not because we're assholes but because we all feel like we could've come up with this idea: take a 35-year old song, drain out all the social critique and most of the wit, keep the corny redneck accent and add trap drums. Ta-da! Or should I say "Da-hah Da-hah!"? "Panini" is dope tho.
