I recently was in the mood for some racing games as I mentioned yesterday with my Gran Turismo 6 post. But before I started playing GT I went back to check out both Need For Speed Underground 2 and Most Wanted on the PS2, and while doing that I decided to go back to 2015s Need For Speed as I stopped playing it after spending 30 hours on it.
There was something special at the time when Underground 2 and Most Wanted were released, not just in video games but even in real life that I feel increased our enjoyment of those games. Customizing and tuning the cars with flashy looks.
Need for Speed (2015) tried to bring that back, and it did in some areas but it feels poorly done and uninspired for some reason.
They brought back the real life acting from Most Wanted but it felt incoherent as I did not understand the motives or even the relationships between the characters. There are 5 legends that each member look up to and they are the 5 gameplay elements of the game. Speed, Build, Style, Outlaw, and Crew. Each character is supposed to focus on one area but somehow it does not feel like it, the same person that you do sprint races with will give you drift races to do, by all that I did not feel a difference between the characters.
Gameplay is fine, but again they did not feel much different from each other. I remember the drift races in Underground 2 feeling different than the circuit races but here they all look the same with added HUD elements to differenciate it.
Customizing is a good aspect, but again there are not that many different parts to choose from and what differenciate your car from the others is probably going to be the paint and decals as they opened that aspect so much it actually feels great to design.
Despite all that, it is fun to play for 10 hours before feeling that the game is not going anywhere. As I said that the gamplay is fine and customizing your decals is fun so you can have a good time with it but not for too long. I enjoyed it a lot for the first 6 hours.
If you want to play it do that before the servers are shut down as this game requires an internet connection to be played, otherwise you can not get past the title screen.
