“We sat in the porch swing and huddled under a blanket and talked until the stars disappeared from the sky and the light turned pink. Then we went to bed and Tom made me forget, for a little while, about the war being waged on the other side of the ocean, and the smoke rising from a house that should have been empty.” Karen White - The Night The Lights Went Out.
My favorite part of this book was the character, Sugar’s, backstory. The book would do a really neat job of switching not only between two characters, but switching from present day to the 1930s. I would be the most absorbed in the story when it was a flashback to Sugar’s younger self. So much so, I actually wish the author had just made that her story.
As much as I enjoyed Sugars not-so-sweetness as an older woman, I didn’t connect with any of the other main characters or love interests. Especially Merilee, who was the most frustrating character of the bunch. My opinion is due to how she is in so much denial about who the killer is that she’s downright dumb. Her friends literally have to sit her down and be like “sis it’s obvious” and she’s still in denial. I feel like I wasn’t alone in figuring out who the killer was/ the killer’s motive by pretty much the middle of the book. Merilee is not written as dumb. She’s written as misguided maybe. She’s taken advantage of and has to grow her confidence through out the book, but she is not flat out dumb. So the Author’s choice in making Merilee act like Dora the Explorer with every object and clue in plain site is almost insulting to the reader as they want to yell out “It’s right in front of you!”
I think the author needs to trust more in her reader’s understanding or even being more surprised if she made it less obvious. The clues might as well have been written in bold. For this reason, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it. The descriptions, however, do paint a beautiful world you want to dive into and live in.
