Where do we get our IRON from? .
Did you know that there are 2 types of iron ?
Heme-iron and non heme iron. Heme comes from animals flesh and non heme from plants.
The body has a beautiful system for iron : storing iron - storing a backup for iron and – when low on iron improved absorption of iron – when high on iron disposing of iron
The concerning part about this is that this system only works for non heme plant derived iron.
Heme iron keeps on being absorbed by the body and builds up which is very toxic for the body and the more you store too much the more damage it will do to the body leading to all kinds of ailments and diseases. Apart from the fact that that iron comes in an unhealthy package being animal meat. (cancer, heart disease, gut and intestine problems, diabetes, alzheimer, parkinson, antibiotics, pus, poop, inflammatory, 0 fiber)
But where do you get it from on a plantbased diet ?
For example all legumes( also hummus/tofu/tempe) , nuts, seeds, dark leafy greens, grains, vegetables, potatoes, fruits, cacao, tomatoes(tomato paste/sauce) contain iron. Legumes are iron and protein BOMBS
I try to incorporate legumes at least in my lunch and dinner there are many to choose from and they are crazy healthy and one of the best preventing/fighting cancer foods. I eat tofu/tempe rarily so no worries you are not dependent from it at all ! And I have most of the stated foods above almost every day !
To absorb non heme iron well as it is less easy to absorb as from meat, ( logical because the animal you eat also had to make that iron from their food but it is an already ready iron package stored in the meat )
always eat some vitamin C containing foods with/in every mealbut this will become natural to you as you eat fruit with your oats some onion and bell pepper or a splash of lemon juice with dinneror combine with sweet potatoes! Vitamin C will improve your absorption of iron by around 6 times.
Just eat plenty and a variety !
