Understanding Gender Identity From terminology to etiquette, the following primer offers one useful outline to reference and support transgender family members, friends, neighbors, co-workers, and patients. As more people become aware of the transgender and gender-nonconforming experience, many may be uncertain about the terminology used by these communities. A NewYork-Presbyterian expert breaks down some of the terms that are used to describe the spectrum of gender identity to help people better understand both the language and how to create a more inclusive environment for the estimated 1 million adults in the U.S. who identify as transgender. One of the first steps is understanding the use of a person’s personal pronouns rather than making assumptions. Reposted from nycscr - We have received an urgent call for help from one of our emergency vet partners. A 1 year old female Rottweiler was brought in, after being hit by a car, in critical condition. Lizzie, was hit and run at a very high-speed, and she has very serious injuries. Her injuries to her legs are severe, and they aren’t sure if they will be able to be saved, one of her legs is degloved. Her entire right side of her body is pretty wrecked. Lizzie’s family surrendered her to the hospital, as they don’t have the means to treat Lizzie’s severe injuries. They also admitted, that the were walking her, when she escaped the leash, and was hit by the car. Lizzie’s injuries are very critical, and it is not clear if she will be able to pull through. The hospitals only choice after her family signed her over, was euthanasia. Being that she is only 1 year old, and reported to be a very nice family dog, they called us as a last ditch effort to save her life. We could not say no to helping her, knowing that she would be euthanized. We will not allow that to happen without giving her a fighting chance. Lizzie’s care will be in the tens of thousands of dollars. We are hoping you will agree with us, that this dog deserves a fighting chance. Please, consider helping us to save Lizzys life. Her after care will require at least 3 months of specialty care alone should she survive. This is devastating for Lizzie, who is terrified and confused. In the past we have always tried to keep families and their pets together by assisting them with vet care. This sadly is not the case with Lizzy, as the family has expressed at this time that they don’t have the means to properly meet her basic or medical needs, keeping her is not an option. To make a donation for Lizze’s medical care go to www.nycsecondchancerescue.org/donate Or Venmo - NYCSecondchancerescue Any amount is greatly appreciated. dog dogs adoptdontshop adopt foster help save rescuedog rescuedogs rescue helpme brooklyn nyc newyork manhattan queens StatenIsland thebronx ny

Shyly sweet, sensitive and kind, Riley waits for a family who can give him the warm and loving home he so deserves! He’s so quiet and patient and good. Will you help him? As a volunteer writes: “Riley is a very attractive & handsome middle aged gentleman with a winning smile! He is dressed as a fox, all in red, well groomed and healthy looking. Riley walks quite well on the leash, does not chase pigeons, & respects his peers just like he does in our playgroups. He is a bit timid but will sit for caresses, and he absolutely relishes treats. His previous owners say that he loves to play, & he has started to run & jump after tennis balls in our yard. Riley would be playful with and respectful of the cats he lived with. He owns a sensitive soul & would likely do best with an insightful new owner or family. Reposted from erindogovich - PASCO💓 TO BE KILLED – 6/27/2019 RESCUE ONLY He has such a joyful countenance, we just adore PASCO. He is the epitome of Happy-Go-Lucky, & that tail of his is an ever moving whirligig as he races from his toys to the promise of treats and back to toys again. He loves being with people, and you can see it all over his face and in every movement of his body. He just wants to please. He leaves the precious toys he loves just to do a perfect “sit” for you and make you happy. He then runs back to his tennis balls. It’s hard for one so full of life and so vibrant to spend all day in a small windowless kennel, just waiting for those 10 minutes out of doors when he can feel the sun on his fur & stretch his legs. He is such a handsome boy, such a good, sweet boy, he just needs out of the shelter and into an active family that will involve him in all their activities – walking, hiking, playing fetch, and maybe even a swim! Reposted from erindogovich - EGYPT💓 TO BE KILLED - 6/27/2019 RESCUE ONLY Lovely Egypt Will Lend You Her Paw! She’s absolutely stunning! A study in ebony, EGYPT is gloriously beautiful with a shiny coat the color of a midsummer night. Gentle & incredibly sweet, she has no idea why she & her sibling, Zion, have found themselves at the shelter. It’s clearly obvious they have only known the comfort and safety of a family home, and that is exactly where they should be – not separated from each other, lonely and alone in the shelter. Egypt is trying so hard to be brave & stoic. She likes to relax with the volunteers who give her love, comfort, & yummy treats. They even play ball with her and she tries to muster up the enthusiasm to retrieve them despite her broken heart. They tell her not to worry, it will be alright, & she so wants to believe that. But what Egypt really wants with all her heart is to be back in a home with a family to love her and give her back the lovely routine that she came to count on in her 4 years on earth. Reposted from erindogovich - ROSARIO💓 TO BE KILLED – 6/27/2019 RESCUE ONLY A Broken Hearted Senior is devastated & dreams of going home. How do you think it feels when you are 10 years old (like, 100 in human years) & the ONLY family you have ever known since you were two months old gives you up for “barking too much.” Seriously? We are disgusted by people. Rosario has done nothing wrong, & if you read his surrender notes you would see that he is an affectionate, playful, mellow gentleman who is gentle with and friendly to strangers. He is perfectly trained, & even knows his commands in Spanish. This boy intended to spend his whole life with the family he loved, and after giving them everything – including his heart, they stepped on it and tossed him out like trash. He is understandably freaked out at the shelter, and why not? He’s only known family life. This sweet, well trained, senior should be spending his golden years on a cushy bed, surrounded by people who love & appreciate him. Maybe if his family had paid a speck of attention to him, he wouldn’t have barked. He needed them to ‘see’ him. Instead they saw him out the door. NEEDS experienced foster or adopter who can give Rosario back his smile, please hurry . He needs to go to an adult only home (no under age 13) ROSARIO, ID 66295, 10 Yrs. Because they are simply magnificent dogs, with wonderful, affectionate personalities. King Kong is no exception & in fact, is an ambassador for his breed. He’s a gentleman through & through. Patient, kind, shyly sweet & with a gentle heart. He’s absolute perfection & he’s waiting for a worthy family. This big boy shouldn’t have to wait a minute longer, languishing at the shelter when he should be lolling about on a cushy bed – like the king he is. A volunteer writes: “King Kong fits the definition of gentle giant! Although big & likely strong, he is a shy guy who licks hands, enjoys caresses & cruises on the leash. King Kong is calm in his kennel & comes right away when called. He is gorgeous, healthy, perfectly made & beautifully dressed. He does not pay attention to barking dogs & seems to find comfort in his caretaker. He just has a stump of a tail but he makes use of it when his head & back are being scratched. We do not know much about KingKong but it is clear that he likes human company! Volunteer Evelyne Cumps writes: “A well mannered gentleman i met MACC today, great walker, house trained likely (a marker too), a bit shy but quite comfortable once he gets to know you, nears other dogs properly, licks hands even without good smells on them, not too interested in treats or obeying orders or playing. Impressive physical strength is one of his key attributes, but with a harness & an experienced handler, he's responsive & well-behaved when walking on leash, & also appears to be very house trained. Bolo's nose is described as adorably 'boopable', & his enthusiasm for petting, toys, treats and socializing is high, though he does prefer to associate with people over dogs. Reposted from erindogovich - NYX💓 TO BE KILLED – 6/27/2019 RESCUE ONLY She’s simply breathtaking say the volunteers, and if you watch her beautiful video with her volunteer friend, Evelyne Cumps , you will see why she is so loved. She is such a good, sweet girl who has found herself at the shelter when her parent became homeless. She has only known the love of a family, & it’s understandable that this delicate girl is somewhat overwhelmed by these sudden, scary changes in her circumstance.
