Day 113 - Hồ Chí Minh City, Vietnam
We headed back to Ho Chi Minh City from Phu Quoc Island so that we could start making our way up the east coast of Vietnam. We weren’t sure what the facilities in some of the other smaller towns would be like so I decided to get my haircut and beard trimmed in one of the many trendy and cheap barbers in HCMC.
In making this decision I failed to consider that there is a positive correlation between cost and quality, therefore when you pay £4 for a haircut and beard trim you shouldn’t expect high end results. Also, I failed to recognise the “normal” style haircut in South East Asia for men was significantly different to that of the UK. Rather than shaving the whole of the back and sides of your head using the same number on the shaver the absolute maverick barber that I went to only shaved halfway up my head resulting in the classic two-tone fade on the back and sidessee four posted photos for hilarious consequences.
Don’t get me wrong, if anyone can pull off an awful haircut it is this guy (I’m jabbing my thumb at myself whilst writing this post) but when the barber also takes a massive chunk out of the right side of your head there is only so much swagger that can compensate for such an atrocity. Rachael could only laugh out loud when I walked back in the hostel and commented that “I can see parts of your scalp that I never knew existedaren’t skulls such weird shapes”. Needless to say, but I’m going to say it anyway, my beard still looked bloody gorgeous though.
