For my first day in California, and my first time taking my camera out, I was met with an awesome surprise: an abundance of one of my priority lifers, the Chestnut-Backed Chickadee (Poecile rufescens)! They were incredibly fast and moved almost non-stop, and for a bit I was worried I might not get the shot I wanted. Then, as I was hiking back to the car, I heard this lone subject cheeping from the brush. I stopped and tried mimicking his call - something I’d been doing unsuccessfully up to this point. To my delight, though, he responded! For the next five or so minutes, I worked at talking him over to me, and finally it paid off when he landed on a perch right in front of me. He even stopped his normal jumping around to pose! I’m really happy to have gotten to see and photograph this little bird, and I think my first outing being such a success (more awesome shots of other great species to come!) bodes well for the rest of my time in California. Fingers crossed!
