A beautiful Eastern Box Turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina x Terrapene carolina triunguis) that I found at 1:00am in a hotel parking lot in the middle of Valdosta, GA. It appeared that this turtle had been surviving all these years in the city. It only had a small island of undeveloped land, consisting of a small mowed field, a little retention pond, and a incredibly small strip of "forest" to call home. The following morning, I moved him back out to his little island of green in that concrete landscape. I'm certain he's the only box turtle left there, completely cut off from potential mates and the opportunity to pass on his genestotally at the mercy of impending human development. It was a sad situation, but not a unique one. Similar scenarios play out every day as our landscapes are continually changed, often blindly in the name of "human progress". The future is bleak for wildlife like this turtle. I only hope he continues to avoid the lawn mowers and cars for many years to come nature wildlife conservation wildlifeconservation herpetology fieldwork science ecology landscapeecology habitatloss habitatfragmentation scicomm boxturtle EasternBoxTurtle Terrapene Terrapenecarolina herping fieldherping turtle turtles turtlesofinstagram reptile reptiles  reptilesofinstagram herpsofinstagram Georgia wildGeorgia

A zebra’s stripy coat is thought to disperse more than 70 per cent of incoming heat, preventing the animal from overheating in the African sun. This is because air moves at different speeds over light-absorbing black stripes and light-reflecting white stripes, so the zebra creates its own cooling air currents. animals_geolife animalsdoingthings animalplanet wwf natgeo natgeoyourshot natgeowild natgeo_africa natgeotravel southafrica african animal animals zebra wild wildlife animalphotography animaloftheday photo photography photooftheday nature animallovers

My lifer Eastern Worm Snake wrapped around my thumb. Found this little one after flipping a small piece of wood. Worm Snakes are fossorial meaning they spend most of their time underground. Their main source of food includes worms and other invertebrates.

• For my first day in California, and my first time taking my camera out, I was met with an awesome surprise: an abundance of one of my priority lifers, the Chestnut-Backed Chickadee (Poecile rufescens)! They were incredibly fast and moved almost non-stop, and for a bit I was worried I might not get the shot I wanted. Then, as I was hiking back to the car, I heard this lone subject cheeping from the brush. I stopped and tried mimicking his call - something I’d been doing unsuccessfully up to this point. To my delight, though, he responded! For the next five or so minutes, I worked at talking him over to me, and finally it paid off when he landed on a perch right in front of me. He even stopped his normal jumping around to pose! I’m really happy to have gotten to see and photograph this little bird, and I think my first outing being such a success (more awesome shots of other great species to come!) bodes well for the rest of my time in California. Fingers crossed! DOMESTICATED FROM THE WILD Plump neck, chunky torso, sturdy limbs. This is characteristic of the largest antelope - the 'eland' Kidepo valley is a cocktail of wild species. The sight of this chubby antelope added to a long list of animals we had encountered on our game drives. It was especially surprising to learn how much humans benefit from this animal unlike other antelope species. Leather, meat and it's distinctly nutritious milk. But even more interesting that they are vastly domesticated in areas close to where they breed Hopefully on my next tour I find the credibility of the domestication allegation. Have a great week eland nature naturephotography wildlife wildlifephotography travel travelphotography
